In 2019, in collaboration with Green Seat and the Carbon Neutral Group, we proudly supported an initiative to provide efficient charcoal stoves to the most vulnerable households in Uganda. This project aimed to address both environmental and social challenges caused by traditional cooking methods.
Across Africa, over 850 million people rely on wood and charcoal for cooking. Traditional stoves, however, pose severe health risks and environmental challenges. Indoor air pollution from inefficient stoves is a leading cause of respiratory illnesses, contributing to nearly half of pneumonia-related deaths in children under five.
The environmental impact is equally significant. Inefficient combustion increases the demand for wood and charcoal, threatening forests and producing excess greenhouse gas emissions. This project sought to mitigate these issues by introducing sustainable cooking solutions.
The initiative focused on distributing efficient stoves that reduce fuel consumption, thereby improving health outcomes, conserving natural resources, and alleviating financial burdens on families. Traditional stoves often require labor-intensive fuel gathering, a responsibility that disproportionately falls on women and children. By adopting efficient stoves, families saved time and resources, enabling women to focus on other responsibilities and children to dedicate more time to education.
In collaboration with local communities, our partner organisations achieved impressive results over three years:
The impact of this initiative extends beyond the immediate benefits to households. By fostering a network of local entrepreneurs to produce and sell these stoves, the project also promoted economic growth and sustainability. This localised approach ensures that the positive effects continue to ripple across Uganda, contributing to environmental conservation and community resilience.
This project aligns with the following UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
The success of this project demonstrates the power of collective action in driving meaningful change. At the Heartfeldt Foundation, we remain committed to supporting similar sustainability initiatives worldwide. Projects like these improve lives, empower communities, and protect our planet.
Would you like to help us continue making a difference? Your contribution, no matter the size, can create lasting change for both the environment and vulnerable communities.
